Prince-archbishoprics were ecclesiastical principalities within the Holy Roman Empire where a bishop exercised both spiritual authority and temporal rule over a defined territory. The holder, a prince of the empire, enjoyed imperial immediacy, meaning the territory answered directly to the emperor rather than to a regional lord. As rulers, prince-archbishops combined high church office with secular sovereignty, sitting as princes in the imperial diet and shaping regional politics while guiding their diocese.

Governance in a prince-archbishopric merged church administration with princely government. The archbishop-prince presided over civil law, taxation, and defense within his territory, as well as overseeing ecclesiastical matters in the diocese. Appointment of bishops and clergy was tied to papal authority and cathedral chapters, but temporal decisions—such as governing cities, issuing laws, and negotiating with neighboring states—fell under princely prerogative. Members of the ecclesiastical estates and regional chapters participated in imperial governance, linking church hierarchy to imperial politics.

Notable examples include the Prince-Archbishoprics of Mainz, Cologne, and Trier, which were among the most politically influential ecclesiastical states and, in some cases, held electoral privileges within the empire. Other territories also operated as prince-archbishoprics, reflecting the broader pattern of dual religious and secular authority across central Europe.

The system declined with the upheavals of the Reformation and the reshaping of the empire in the early 19th century. The Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 secularized and mediatised many ecclesiastical states, ending their sovereignty and transforming the political map into modern German states. The term now serves as a historical descriptor for these dual-rule entities.
