Primbon is a traditional Javanese system of fortune-telling, astrology, and divination, as well as a body of texts and calendars used to guide daily life. It combines Indigenous Javanese beliefs with Hindu-Buddhist cosmology and, later, Islamic influences, making it a notable part of Indonesian cultural and spiritual practice, especially in Java.

The practice centers on numerical and calendrical calculations, such as weton (the Javanese birth day in a four-day cycle) and neptu numbers. These tools are used to determine auspicious dates, compatibility for marriage, and various fortunes. Primbon texts often provide guidance on matters like marriage prospects, wealth, success in business, travel safety, health, and personal conduct, offering recommendations on specific dates, pairings of days and months, and symbolic choices.

Usage and reception vary by community. People may consult primbon before important decisions—such as selecting a wedding date, evaluating a potential partner, or initiating a business venture. In modern Indonesia, primbon content appears in printed books, traditional calendars, and online platforms, including apps and websites that offer jodoh (compatibility) or timing predictions.

Criticism and status are mixed. While many view primbon as an important element of cultural heritage and folk wisdom, others regard it as superstition or pseudoscience without empirical support. Its role ranges from a respected cultural tradition in everyday life to a topic of debate within religious and scholarly communities, reflecting broader discussions about belief, tradition, and rational inquiry.
