A pressure alarm is a device or function that monitors the pressure of a fluid or gas within a system and triggers an alert when the pressure moves outside predefined limits. It is used to detect conditions such as overpressure, underpressure, or abnormal differential pressure, enabling timely corrective actions to prevent equipment damage, process disruption, or safety hazards.

Operation and signals: A pressure sensor measures the pressure and provides a signal to control logic or a monitoring system. When the measured value crosses a high or low setpoint, the alarm activates. Alarm indications can be audible, visual, or transmitted to a central control system (PLC, SCADA, or safety instrumented system). They are also found in consumer equipment such as home heating systems and appliances with pressurized fluid circuits.

Design and maintenance: Key considerations include sensor technology and accuracy, setpoint tuning, hysteresis and deadband, response time, and redundancy. Regular calibration, testing, and fault indication are essential to maintain reliability, especially in safety-critical applications. In many cases, pressure alarms are integrated into broader safety or automated control architectures and aligned with relevant standards and regulatory requirements.
