Development: Language and communication expand rapidly; vocabulary grows, sentences become more complex, and conversational skills develop. Cognitive skills include basic problem solving, counting, shapes, and early literacy concepts. Motor skills advance, with improved balance, coordination, drawing, cutting, and self-care abilities. Social-emotional skills involve sharing, empathy, following routines, self-regulation, and independence.

Learning and routines: Preschools emphasize play, exploration, and guided instruction. Common activities include story time, imaginative play, art, music, outdoor activity, and early literacy and math activities. Programs may use structured routines, regular meals and rest periods, and small group time. Developmental screenings and progress monitoring help identify delays; referrals may be made for evaluation or services. Many regions support inclusivity for children with disabilities through individualized plans and accommodations.

Family role and transitions: Parents and caregivers reinforce skills at home and participate in learning plans. Safety, nutrition, sleep, and positive behavior guidance are emphasized. A key transition occurs when moving to kindergarten, often accompanied by readiness indicators such as independent bathroom use, following directions, and basic literacy and numeracy concepts.
