It is the earliest stage in some models of change, preceding contemplation. In prekontemplation, a person may be unaware that a problem exists, or they may acknowledge a problem but have no intention of taking action in the foreseeable future. This stage is characterized by a lack of awareness, information, or confidence about changing. Individuals in prekontemplation might dismiss the problem, rationalize their behavior, or simply avoid thinking about it.

Transitioning from prekontemplation to the next stage, contemplation, involves the individual beginning to think about the possibility of change.
