Prateados is a term used in Spanish and Portuguese to describe objects that have been treated to present a silver-like surface, either because they are made of silver or because a thin layer of silver has been deposited onto another metal. The word can function as an adjective (prateado/prateados) or, in some contexts, as a noun referring to silver-plated items. In daily language, it is commonly associated with finishes used on tableware, jewelry, and decorative objects, as well as on certain electronic components.

The silver-plating finish, or prateado, is typically achieved through electroplating or chemical deposition. Common base metals include copper, brass, or nickel-coated supports, with the silver layer ranging from a fraction of a micrometer to a few micrometers in thickness, depending on cost, desired durability, and use. Silver-plated items are often produced to resemble solid silver while offering lower material cost and weight. In some industrial contexts, prateado also refers to silver-coated electrical contacts that benefit from silver’s high conductivity and resistance to corrosion.

Care and maintenance of prateados vary with usage.
