powerpack

Powerpack is a modular energy storage system developed by Tesla Energy for commercial, industrial, and utility-scale use. It consists of lithium-ion battery modules combined with power electronics and thermal management, packaged in containerized units that can be grouped to scale energy capacity and power output to meet project needs. The design emphasizes modularity, enabling customers to add more units over time as energy demands grow.

Powerpack deployments are intended to support grid stability and renewable energy integration. Typical applications include frequency regulation, peak shaving, load shifting, and backup power for critical facilities. The system can be integrated with solar installations, demand-response programs, and microgrids, and is managed by Tesla’s energy software to coordinate charging, discharging, and grid services.

Notable deployments have occurred in multiple countries, including Australia and the United States, where Powerpack units have been used to deliver rapid-response services to electric grids and improve reliability. One widely cited example is the Hornsdale Power Reserve in South Australia, which demonstrated the capability of fast-response storage to stabilize the grid after extreme events and outages.

In its product line, Powerpack served as Tesla Energy’s utility-scale option before the introduction of Megapack in 2019. Megapack offers a larger, integrated solution for higher-capacity projects, and since its launch has become the preferred option for many new installations. Powerpack units continue to operate in existing deployments and may be encountered in ongoing projects or legacy installations.
