Pomade is a hair styling product designed to provide hold, shape, and shine with a waxy or greasy texture. It is typically applied to damp or dry hair and worked through with fingers or a comb to create slicked-back, pompadour, or other classic looks.

There are two main categories: oil-based pomades, which use petrolatum or mineral oils as the primary base, and water-based pomades, which rely on water and emulsifiers to allow easier washing. Oil-based formulations generally offer stronger hold and higher gloss but can be harder to wash out and may leave residue. Water-based pomades rinse out with shampoo and are easier to cleanse and reapply, though they can vary in hold and finish.

Historically, pomade has roots in 19th and early 20th century grooming, associated with barbering and long-lasting, glossy styles. Over time, other products such as gels and waxes broadened styling options, but pomade remains popular for retro looks and modern interpretations that seek substantial hold and shine. In contemporary grooming, many brands offer a spectrum from high-shine to matte finishes, with varying degrees of hold.

Application and maintenance: start with a small amount, warm it between the palms, and distribute evenly through the hair. For strong looks, apply more and comb into place; for a softer style, use less. Oil-based pomades can be tougher to remove and may require more shampoo or clarifying cleansers, while water-based formulas typically rinse out more easily.
