Polyporoid refers to a large and diverse group of fungi, primarily within the Basidiomycota. These fungi are commonly known as polypores or bracket fungi due to their characteristic fruiting body structure, which often appears as a shelf or bracket growing from wood. A defining feature of polyporoids is the presence of pores on the underside of their fruiting bodies, which are hymenia where spores are produced. These pores are essentially tube mouths. This contrasts with many other gilled mushrooms, which have lamellae or gills for spore dispersal.

The polyporoid fungi exhibit a wide range of growth habits. Many are saprotrophic, meaning they obtain nutrients by decomposing dead organic matter, particularly wood. This role makes them significant decomposers in forest ecosystems, playing a crucial part in nutrient cycling. Some polyporoids are parasitic, feeding on living trees, which can lead to significant damage and disease. Others are mycorrhizal, forming symbiotic relationships with plant roots.

Taxonomically, the term polyporoid has been used somewhat broadly over time. Traditionally, it encompassed many species with pores, but modern phylogenetic studies have refined these classifications. Many polyporoid fungi are now placed within the order Polyporales, but the term is still often used informally to refer to any agaricomycete fungus with a poroid hymenophore. Their ecological importance, varied morphology, and widespread distribution make polyporoid fungi a fascinating subject of study in mycology.
