Polymerets is a term encountered in some discussions of polymer science to denote short, well-defined macromolecules that sit between oligomers and conventional, broad-dispersity polymers. The term is not widely standardized, and its usage varies by author.

Definition: A polymeret is characterized by a precisely defined chain length, discrete repeat units, and specific, chemically defined end groups. This explicit definition makes them distinct from typical polymers, which exhibit distribution in chain length. They are often created with living or reversible-deactivation polymerization techniques, or by assembling monomer units in a sequence-controlled fashion.

Synthesis and design: Methods include living/controlled radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, and post-polymerization end-capping, as well as modular synthesis approaches such as click-chemistry linking of oligomeric blocks. The aim is to suppress polydispersity and achieve uniform properties across samples.

Properties and potential applications: Because of uniform length and end-group structure, polymerets can display predictable self-assembly, phase behavior, and optical or electronic properties. They are studied for use in high-precision materials, sequence-controlled polymers, data storage, and diagnostic or therapeutic platforms in research contexts.
