Polybutadiene is a synthetic polymer produced by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene to form long chains. Its microstructure depends on polymerization conditions and catalysts, yielding cis-1,4- and trans-1,4-additions, as well as 1,2-addition with vinyl side groups.

Most commercial polybutadiene rubber is made by anionic polymerization with organolithium initiators, which gives high cis-1,4 content and elastomeric properties. Emulsion or suspension polymerization can produce other grades with different microstructures. Hydrogenation converts polybutadiene to hydrogenated polybutadiene, increasing thermal stability and aging resistance.

Properties of polybutadiene include a very low glass transition temperature, high elasticity at room temperature, and good abrasion resistance. It blends well with natural rubber and other synthetic rubbers to tailor processability and mechanical performance. The material generally has weaker heat resistance and aging characteristics than some alternatives and may require stabilizers to resist ozone and oxidative degradation.

Applications are dominated by its use as a major component of synthetic rubber. It is common in tires, belts, hoses, and seals, where it contributes to resilience and wear resistance. It is also employed as a modifier or toughener for plastics, adhesives, and coatings, to improve impact resistance and elasticity.

Safety and environmental aspects are typical of polymer processing: polybutadiene itself is a relatively inert material, but production and formulation involve chemicals and solvents that require proper handling and containment.
