Polttoainebrikettejä, commonly known as fuel briquettes, are a type of solid biofuel produced by compressing organic matter. These materials typically include sawdust, wood chips, agricultural residues like straw or husks, and sometimes paper. The compression process removes much of the air and moisture from the raw material, resulting in a dense, compact fuel source.

The production of fuel briquettes involves mechanical pressing, often at high pressures, which can also generate heat. This heat aids in binding the material together, sometimes with the addition of natural binders, though many briquettes are self-binding due to the lignin present in wood and plant matter. The resulting briquettes are uniform in shape and size, making them easy to handle, store, and transport. They are also generally cleaner burning than raw biomass, producing less smoke and ash.

Fuel briquettes are primarily used for combustion in heating systems, including wood stoves, boilers, and furnaces, as well as for cooking in some regions. Their high energy density means they can provide sustained heat output. Compared to traditional firewood, briquettes offer a more consistent burn rate and a higher calorific value per unit volume. Their production is often seen as a way to utilize waste materials that would otherwise be discarded, contributing to a more circular economy and providing a renewable energy alternative.
