polonaises
Polonaises are a family of Polish dances and corresponding musical pieces. They originated in the Polish noble courts in the 16th century as a processional dance performed at formal assemblies and public ceremonies. Over time, the form spread across Europe and developed into a concert genre, especially in the Romantic era, where composers wrote polonaises for piano, orchestra, and other forces.
Musically, polonaises are typically in 3/4 time with a stately tempo and a ceremonial, march-like character.
Frédéric Chopin is particularly associated with the form, composing many piano polonaises including the Military Polonaise
Today, the polonaise remains a symbol of Polish cultural identity and is performed in concert as well
