Polipropiliden, commonly known as polypropylene (PP), is a versatile synthetic thermoplastic polymer derived from the monomer propylene. It belongs to the polyolefin family, alongside polyethylene, and is widely used in various industries due to its excellent properties and cost-effectiveness.

Polypropylene was first synthesized in 1951 by Italian chemists Giulio Natta and Paolo Corradini, who developed a method for producing stereoregular polypropylene. This breakthrough earned Natta the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963. The polymer is produced through chain-growth polymerization, typically using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst or metallocene catalysts.

Polypropylene exhibits a high strength-to-density ratio, making it lightweight yet durable. It is resistant to fatigue, chemicals, and moisture, which enhances its suitability for applications requiring long-term performance. The material also has a relatively high melting point (around 160–170 °C or 320–340 °F), allowing it to be processed using standard thermoplastic techniques such as injection molding, extrusion, and blow molding.

Due to its versatility, polypropylene is used in a wide range of products, including packaging materials (e.g., bottles, containers, and films), automotive components (e.g., bumpers, dashboards, and interior trim), textiles (e.g., ropes, carpets, and clothing fibers), and consumer goods (e.g., kitchenware, toys, and medical devices). Its recyclability and biodegradability (under specific conditions) have also contributed to its popularity in sustainable applications.

While polypropylene offers numerous advantages, it has some limitations, such as lower heat resistance compared to other engineering plastics and susceptibility to stress cracking in certain environments. Proper formulation and processing techniques can mitigate these issues, further expanding its range of applications.
