Polüglotism refers to the ability to speak and understand multiple languages. A person who possesses this ability is known as a polüglot. The term originates from the Greek words "polys" meaning "many" and "glōtta" meaning "tongue" or "language". There is no universally agreed-upon number of languages that defines a polüglot, but it generally implies proficiency in at least three or four languages, with some definitions extending to six or more.

The acquisition of multiple languages can occur through various means. Some individuals are raised in multilingual households, naturally absorbing several languages from a young age, a process known as first language acquisition.
