Plateenes are a class of two-dimensional plate-like nanomaterials consisting of crystalline inorganic or hybrid organic-inorganic compounds. They possess a thickness measured in a few nanometers and lateral dimensions ranging from tens to hundreds of nanometers, yielding a high aspect ratio. Plateenes exhibit anisotropic properties that differ along the thickness and in-plane directions, making them of interest for tunable optical, electronic, and catalytic performance.

Most plateenes show well-defined crystal facets on their large faces and may be passivated at the edges with ligands or inorganic shells to enhance stability and processability. They can be composed of metal chalcogenides, oxides, nitrides, or layered hybrids, and can be synthesized as colloidal dispersions or grown directly on substrates.

Synthetic routes include colloidal synthesis in solution, often using hot-injection or templated growth to control thickness, as well as vapor-phase epitaxy or exfoliation of layered precursors onto substrates. Surface chemistry, solvent choice, and precursor reactivity govern aspect ratio, thickness, and monodispersity.

Properties of plateenes are strongly anisotropic. Quantum confinement effects are pronounced in the thickness direction, affecting band gaps and exciton dynamics, while in-plane properties can approach bulk values. Surface chemistry and ligation have a large influence on stability, charge transport, and catalytic activity.

Potential applications span catalysis, energy storage and conversion, photonic and optoelectronic devices, and sensing. Challenges for practical use include scalable and uniform synthesis, controlled assembly and alignment, environmental stability, and compatibility with device fabrication processes. The term plateene remains more common in speculative or early-stage literature than in established standard nomenclature.
