Plateene is a proposed two-dimensional material consisting of ultra-thin plate-like layers arranged in a cohesive lattice. The concept envisions a stack of platelets bound by van der Waals forces or covalent linkages, yielding anisotropic properties along the platelet planes. Plateene has appeared in speculative and theoretical discussions of 2D materials and has not yet been demonstrated experimentally.

Structure and properties: The material is described as comprising discrete platelets with defined lateral dimensions that form a 2D network. The platelet-based architecture is predicted to give high in-plane stiffness, low mass, and a variable electronic structure. The band gap, conductivity, and chemical reactivity could be tuned through composition, platelet size, stacking order, and surface termination.

Synthesis and challenges: No experimental synthesis has been reported. Theoretical models consider routes such as directed assembly of platelets, templated growth on substrates, or exfoliation of layered plate-like precursors. Major challenges include establishing stable interplatelet bonding, preventing agglomeration, maintaining uniform platelet orientation, and scalable production.

Applications: In theoretical scenarios, Plateene could be used in nanoelectronics, energy storage, catalysis, and sensing, leveraging anisotropic transport, high surface area, and tunable optical properties.
