Plastitüüpe refers to the classification of plastics based on their chemical structure and properties. This categorization helps in understanding their behavior, applications, and recyclability. The most common classification divides plastics into two main groups: thermoplastics and thermosets.

Thermoplastics can be repeatedly softened by heating and then hardened by cooling. This reversible process makes them suitable for recycling through melting and reshaping. Common examples include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polystyrene (PS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Each of these has distinct properties that dictate their uses, from packaging films to rigid containers and fibers.

Thermosets, on the other hand, undergo an irreversible chemical change when heated, forming a rigid, cross-linked molecular structure. Once cured, they cannot be softened and reshaped by heating. This makes them generally difficult to recycle through melting. Examples of thermosets include epoxy resins, phenolic resins, and vulcanized rubber. They are often used in applications requiring high strength, heat resistance, and durability, such as in adhesives, coatings, and electrical components.

Another common way to identify plastics is through the Resin Identification Code (RIC), a symbol typically found on plastic products. This code, consisting of a number enclosed in a triangle of arrows, helps identify the type of plastic resin used. While often associated with recycling, the RIC primarily identifies the material, and not all plastics with RIC codes are readily recyclable in all areas. Understanding these different plastitüüpe is crucial for material selection, product design, and waste management efforts.
