It is widely used in the textile printing industry due to its durability and opacity. The variations in plastisol inks are typically categorized based on their properties and intended applications.

One common classification is by viscosity. High-viscosity plastisols are thicker and are often used for designs requiring sharp detail or for printing on darker garments where opacity is crucial. Low-viscosity plastisols are thinner and flow more easily, making them suitable for fine mesh screens, delicate designs, or when a softer feel is desired on the fabric.

Another important distinction is between standard and specialty plastisols. Standard plastisols offer a wide range of colors and good general performance. Specialty plastisols include inks with unique effects such as puff inks that create a raised texture, metallic inks that give a shimmering appearance, glow-in-the-dark inks that absorb light and emit it in the dark, and discharge inks which can remove the dye from a fabric to create a print.

Furthermore, plastisoltyyppejä can be distinguished by their curing requirements. Most plastisols require a specific curing temperature, typically between 150-160 degrees Celsius, to fully cross-link and achieve their full durability. Some newer formulations, known as low-cure plastisols, can cure at lower temperatures, which is beneficial for printing on heat-sensitive fabrics.
