Plastikstoffe are synthetic or semi-synthetic organic polymers that can be molded or formed into solid objects. They are derived from petrochemical feedstocks, though some are based on bio-based materials. The term Plastikstoffe encompasses a wide range of materials with varying properties and applications. The most common types are thermoplastics, which soften when heated and can be reshaped (examples: polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate). Thermosetting plastics, once cured, cannot be remelted (examples: epoxy resins, phenolics, and amino resins). Bioplastics are derived from renewable resources and may be biodegradable under certain conditions (examples: polylactic acid, polyhydroxyalkanoates).

Processing methods include extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, and film casting. Plastikstoffe are valued for light weight, strength, chemical resistance, and versatile formability, enabling uses in packaging, automotive, electronics, construction, and consumer goods.

Environmental considerations are central to discussions of Plastikstoffe. They persist in the environment and can fragment into microplastics. Production involves fossil resources and energy, and some additives raise health concerns. End-of-life management includes mechanical recycling (sorting, washing, reprocessing), chemical recycling (depolymerization to monomers), and energy recovery; however, recycling rates vary by region. Design for recyclability and extended use can reduce environmental impacts. Bioplastics may offer reduced lifetime emissions when properly sourced and disposed, but not all are compostable in home or natural environments. Public policy, consumer behavior, and engineering continue to push toward more sustainable life cycles for Plastikstoffe.
