plasmenyl
Plasmenyl is a vinyl-ether substituent found in glycerophospholipids, most commonly in plasmalogens. In these lipids, the sn-1 position of the glycerol backbone is linked to an alkyl chain via a vinyl ether bond, defined as -O-CH=CH-R, rather than a typical ester linkage. The plasmenyl group distinguishes plasmalogens from related plasmanyl lipids, where the bond is an alkyl ether without the vinyl double bond.
Plasmalogens occur widely in animal tissues, with high concentrations in the heart and brain and in myelin.
Functions attributed to plasmalogens include contributions to membrane structure and fluidity, protection against oxidative stress through
Clinically, decreased plasmalogen levels have been observed in certain inherited peroxisomal biogenesis disorders, such as Zellweger
