Plafondlaag is the finishing layer applied to the underside of a ceiling. It creates the visible surface and contributes to appearance, fire resistance, acoustics, and insulation. The plafondlaag is laid over a substrate such as a timber or metal frame, plaster, or gypsum board, and can consist of traditional plaster, lime plaster, gypsum plaster, or a skim coat on drywall. In modern construction it is often realized as a gypsum-board ceiling with a finishing coat or joint compound; older or stylistic ceilings may use stucco or decorative plaster.
