Plaati, also known as Platycephalus bassensis, is a species of fish belonging to the family Platycephalidae, commonly referred to as flatheads. This species is native to the coastal waters of southern Australia, particularly around the states of Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania. Plaati is known for its distinctive appearance, with a flattened head and body, and a large mouth filled with sharp teeth.

The plaati typically inhabits sandy or muddy bottoms in coastal waters, estuaries, and sometimes in brackish environments. It is a benthic predator, feeding primarily on small fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. Plaati is known to be a nocturnal hunter, using its excellent camouflage to ambush prey under the cover of darkness.

Plaati can grow up to 60 centimeters in length, although sizes typically range between 30 to 40 centimeters. The species exhibits sexual dimorphism, with females generally growing larger than males. The coloration of plaati varies, but it often features a mottled pattern of browns, greys, and whites, which helps it blend into its surroundings.

In terms of reproduction, plaati is known to spawn during the warmer months, typically between November and February. The females release their eggs into the water column, where they are fertilized by the males. The larvae are pelagic and drift with the currents until they settle on the bottom and undergo metamorphosis into juvenile fish.

Plaati is of commercial and recreational fishing interest, particularly in southern Australia. However, due to its slow growth rate and late maturity, it is considered vulnerable to overfishing. As a result, fishing regulations and size limits are in place to help manage and conserve plaati populations.
