Pildisensor is a term often used in Estonian to refer to an image sensor. An image sensor is an electronic component that converts light into an electrical signal. This signal is then processed to create a digital image. Image sensors are fundamental to digital cameras, smartphones, scanners, and many other devices that capture visual information.

There are two main types of image sensors: Charge-Coupled Devices (CCDs) and Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) sensors. CCD sensors were historically dominant but are now largely surpassed by CMOS sensors in most consumer applications due to CMOS's lower power consumption, faster readout speeds, and integration capabilities.

The performance of an image sensor is determined by several factors, including its resolution (the number of pixels), pixel size, sensitivity to light (ISO), dynamic range, and noise levels. Higher resolution generally means more detail in an image, while larger pixels can capture more light, leading to better low-light performance. Dynamic range refers to the sensor's ability to capture detail in both very bright and very dark areas of a scene simultaneously. Noise is unwanted visual grain that can degrade image quality, especially in low light.
