A pijpleiding is a Dutch term for a pipeline, a long, continuously connected pipe used for the transportation of liquids or gases over a distance. Pipelines are manufactured from various materials, including steel, reinforced concrete, polyethylene, and composite materials, each chosen based on the fluid to be conveyed, pressure requirements, and environmental conditions. The function of a pijpleiding is to provide a safe, efficient, and reliable conduit that maintains pressure, prevents leaks, and minimizes contamination of the transported media.

Pijpleidingen are employed in many sectors. In the energy sector they move crude oil, natural gas, and refined products across countries and continents. Water supply networks, wastewater treatment plants, and municipal distribution systems use pipelines to deliver potable water and remove sewage. Industrial processes may rely on pipelines to transfer chemicals, steam, or coolant. Automotive and aviation industries also use short pipelines for hydraulic fluids and fuel.

Construction of a pijpleiding involves careful planning of route, grading, and supporting structures to handle mechanical stress and ground movement. Installation techniques vary from trenching to trenchless methods such as horizontal directional drilling or pipe jacking. Materials are selected to resist corrosion, chemical attack, and thermal expansion; coatings and cathodic protection are common protective measures. Monitoring systems, such as inline inspection tools called "smart pigs", routinely inspect pipelines for integrity and integrity management.

Historically, the first large-scale pipelines appeared in the early 20th century, facilitating the rapid expansion of fossil fuel distribution within industrialized nations.
