Pidurikettade, Estonian for brake pads, are components of disc brake systems that provide the friction material needed to slow or stop a vehicle. They press against a rotating brake disc when the brake pedal is actuated, converting kinetic energy into heat through friction.

Construction and materials: A brake pad typically consists of a backing plate of metal with a friction material bonded to one side. The friction compound can be organic (non-asbestos), semi-metallic, ceramic, or sintered. Each type has different characteristics in terms of grip, wear, heat tolerance, noise, and dust production. Organic pads are generally quieter and gentler on rotors but wear faster. Semi-metallic and ceramic pads offer longer life and better heat resistance but can be noisier and more expensive. Sintered pads are common in motorcycles and some cars, offering high durability under heavy use.

Operation and wear: During braking, pads are pressed onto the discs by calipers. The resulting friction converts motion into heat, causing wear on both pad and rotor. Bedding-in (seasoning) the pads on a controlled drive improves initial friction and reduces glazing. Pads should be inspected regularly; signs of wear include thinning material, squeal, reduced braking efficiency, vibration, or a warning light.

Maintenance and safety: Pads wear gradually and must be replaced before the backing plate or caliper components are damaged. It is recommended to replace pads in pairs on an axle to maintain balanced braking. Dispose of used pads according to local regulations; some materials can pose environmental or health risks. Regular inspection under varying driving conditions helps ensure reliable braking performance.
