The penteconter, also spelled pentekonter, is an ancient Greek warship and later a common type of light galley named for its oars: penteconter means “fifty oars.” In most sources it denotes a vessel with a single tier of oars, totaling about 50 rowers (roughly 25 on each side), plus a helmsman, captain, and a small crew for supporting roles. The hull was long and slender, optimized for speed and maneuverability, and the ship usually carried a single square sail in addition to the oars.
