The name pengoj is attributed to a fictional Mistwood language, where it is said to combine roots meaning vine and light. In many works this plant is placed in a foraging or horticultural context within a broader, invented plant family, often labeled Pengaceae for convenience in encyclopedic entries.

Description

Pengoj is a vigorous, evergreen liana that can reach considerable lengths and form dense thickets. It has glossy, ovate leaves about 6–12 cm long and produces pendant inflorescences from which spherical berries develop. The berries, typically 6–12 mm in diameter, emit a soft bioluminescent glow that ranges from blue to violet, depending on the cultivar. Ecology
