Peineta is a large decorative comb worn in the hair in Spanish-speaking cultures. Used to secure a mantilla, a lace veil, or as an ornamental hairpiece, the peineta is typically placed at the back or on the crown, with the veil draped over it to create a raised silhouette.

In terms of construction and design, the peineta may be made of tortoiseshell, horn, metal, plastic, or wood. It is often fan-shaped or crescent, with decorative metalwork, filigree, or enamel, and features many teeth to grip the hair. Modern versions are lighter and more compact, but the traditional form remains widely recognized in regional dress.

In Spain, the peineta is associated with the mantilla, a traditional lace veil worn during ceremonies, Holy Week processions, and festive occasions. It is especially linked to Andalusian and Valencia regional costumes, including the fallera dress. The peineta also appears in Latin American communities with Spanish heritage, where similar headpieces accompany folk costumes and dances.

The comb is anchored under the mantilla, with the veil placed over it; positioning can affect the height and shape of the hairstyle. Careful placement and maintenance are important to prevent bending or breaking.

Today the peineta is used in formal traditional dress, flamenco performances, weddings, and cultural festivals. Mass-produced versions remain common while antique tortoiseshell specimens are collected as historical artifacts.
