In architecture and landscape design patternwork refers to the organized repetition of elements—façade ornament, paving, planting schemes—that contribute to rhythm, scale, and wayfinding.

Historically, patternwork appears in prehistoric textiles, pottery decoration, and architectural ornament, serving aesthetic, symbolic, social, and functional roles. Common compositional strategies include repetition, symmetry, tessellation, modularity, and fractal-like scaling.
