Patkányt is the Hungarian word for rat. Rats are medium-sized, long-tailed rodents of the genus Rattus. They are typically considered pests due to their association with disease transmission and damage to property. There are two main species commonly referred to as rats: the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the brown rat (Rattus norvegicus).

Black rats, also known as ship rats, are smaller and more agile, often found in the upper levels of buildings and on ships. They prefer warmer climates and are known for their climbing abilities. Brown rats, also called sewer rats or Norway rats, are larger and more robust. They are more commonly found in burrows, sewers, and basements, and are more tolerant of colder temperatures.

Rats are omnivorous and have a varied diet, consuming grains, fruits, insects, and even small animals. They are prolific breeders, contributing to their widespread presence. Their droppings, urine, and bites can transmit various diseases to humans and animals, including leptospirosis, hantavirus, and salmonellosis. In urban environments, rats can cause significant damage by gnawing on electrical wires, pipes, and structural components of buildings. Control methods often involve trapping, poisoning, and maintaining good sanitation practices to reduce food and shelter availability. In some cultures, rats are also kept as pets or used in scientific research.
