Patineret describes a surface that has acquired a patina, either through natural aging or deliberate treatment. A patina is a thin, often colorful layer that forms on metals and other materials through chemical reactions with air, moisture, pollutants, or intentionally applied chemicals. The result is typically a change in color and texture and can provide a degree of protection against further corrosion.

The term is primarily used about metals such as copper, bronze, brass and silver, but patination can also be applied to wood, ceramics and stone to imitate age or achieve a specific aesthetic. Natural patination occurs over time as a surface interacts with its environment. Artificial patination uses controlled chemical baths, heat, ammonia, or other agents to produce desired hues, such as verdigris on copper alloys (green-blue), brown or black tones on bronze, or warm dark shades on silver.

Care and preservation of patinated surfaces typically involves gentle cleaning and, if desired, a protective layer such as wax or a clear coating to slow further changes. Harsh cleaners or abrasive treatments can remove or alter the patina, changing appearance and perceived value.

Uses include sculpture, architecture, jewelry, furniture and interior design, where patination is valued for its depth of color and sense of history. Authentic natural patina often adds value and character, while artificial patination is common in decorative arts to achieve a controlled, deliberate antiqued look; in appraisal, intent and execution are taken into account.
