The goals of parkdesign include accessibility for all users, safety, climate resilience, biodiversity, and long-term maintainability, while delivering aesthetic quality and opportunities for play, leisure, and cultural activities. Designers consider circulation, sightlines, accessibility features, programming, and maintenance requirements to ensure that parks serve diverse user groups across seasons and weather conditions.

The design process typically follows stages such as site analysis, stakeholder engagement, conceptual design, design development, construction documentation, and post-occupancy maintenance planning. Tools and methods may include master plans, sketches, computer-aided design or BIM models, and environmental impact considerations where relevant. Green infrastructure is often integral, with features like permeable paving, bioswales, rain gardens, shade structures, and efficient lighting incorporated to manage stormwater and reduce energy use.

Core elements of parkdesign encompass spatial organization, pedestrian and bicycle circulation, planting schemes, water elements, seating and furniture, play and recreation facilities, material choices, and interpretive or wayfinding signage. Park typologies include urban parks, neighborhood parks, regional parks, waterfront parks, botanical gardens, and memorial or commemorative parks, each adapting principles to local context.

Historically, parkdesign has evolved from formal ornamental gardens toward multifunctional, community-oriented spaces influenced by movements such as the English landscape tradition and the City Beautiful movement, with contemporary practice emphasizing sustainability, inclusivity, and adaptive reuse.
