Parasolwing refers to an aircraft wing configuration in which the wing is mounted above the fuselage and supported by struts, giving the impression of a parasol. The term is often used interchangeably with parasol wing to describe braced high-wing designs where the wing does not join the fuselage directly but is held aloft by vertical supports.

History and usage

Parasol wings were popular in the early years of aviation, particularly during the 1910s to 1930s, for reconnaissance, observation, and light sport aircraft. The above-fuselage placement provided excellent downward visibility for observers and pilots and allowed easier access to wing roots and landing gear in some designs. The configuration also reduced interference between the wing and fuselage in certain layouts and made maintenance of the wing-fuselage junction more straightforward.

Design characteristics

A typical parasol-wing aircraft uses cabane struts or similar bracing to connect the wing to the fuselage, often with wires or rigid members for additional support. The wing is placed well above the cockpit, sometimes with a dedicated pod or pylon arrangement. The structure is generally lighter and simpler to build than a cantilever high-wing, but the supporting struts add parasitic drag. The fuselage tends to be slender to maximize visibility and unobstructed downward view.

Performance and legacy

Parasol-wing aircraft offer good low-speed stability and favorable visibility, making them suitable for observation and trainer roles in their era. However, the drag from struts and bracing limited high-speed performance compared with later cantilever high-wing designs. Today, parasol wings are rare in new production but remain of interest in historical study and in some homebuilt or kit aircraft that emulate early configurations.
