Paleoenvironment refers to the environmental conditions that prevailed at a particular time in the geological past. It encompasses climate, hydrology, vegetation, biodiversity, topography and chemical conditions that shaped and were shaped by living organisms. Paleoenvironmental reconstructions seek to characterize the landscapes and habitats in which ancient organisms lived, and to understand how environments changed through time. They are inferred from multiple lines of evidence and usually integrated with stratigraphy and tectonics.

Researchers use proxies from rocks and fossils to infer past environments. Sedimentary facies, grain size, bedding, mineralogy, and fossil assemblages indicate depositional settings, such as rivers, lakes, coastal wetlands, or deep marine basins. Fossils, including microbes, plants, animals, and ichnofossils, provide clues about temperature, water depth, salinity, and productivity. Geochemical and isotopic analyses—such as oxygen and carbon isotopes in carbonate and phosphate, strontium isotopes, and clumped isotopes—yield temperature estimates and hydrological information. Paleosols, leaf physiognomy, pollen and spores, and other paleobotanical indicators reveal terrestrial climates and vegetation. Dating and correlation, including magnetostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and radiometric methods, place paleoenvironmental reconstructions in time.

Paleoenvironmental studies illuminate how ecosystems responded to long-term climate changes and short-term events, aiding interpretations of evolutionary patterns, biogeography, and mass extinctions. They also face challenges, such as preservation bias, diagenesis altering signals, time-averaging, and uncertainties in dating. Robust reconstructions rely on multiple, independent proxies and transparent uncertainty assessment.
