Paksusuolensyöpä, also known as colorectal cancer, refers to cancer that begins in the colon or rectum. It is one of the most common types of cancer globally. The disease typically develops slowly over many years, often starting as non-cancerous growths called polyps on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Some of these polyps can become cancerous over time.

The exact causes of paksusuolensyöpä are not fully understood, but several risk factors have been identified. These include increasing age, a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, certain inherited genetic syndromes like Lynch syndrome, and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Lifestyle factors also play a significant role, with a diet low in fiber and high in red and processed meats, lack of physical activity, obesity, smoking, and heavy alcohol consumption being associated with an increased risk.

Symptoms of paksusuolensyöpä can vary and may not appear until the cancer is advanced. Common signs include changes in bowel habits such as persistent diarrhea or constipation, a feeling that the bowel does not empty completely, rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, abdominal pain, cramping, or bloating, and unexplained weight loss. In some cases, anemia due to chronic blood loss can also be a symptom.

Early detection is crucial for successful treatment. Screening methods, such as colonoscopy, fecal occult blood tests, and sigmoidoscopy, can detect polyps or cancer at an early, often curable, stage. Treatment options depend on the stage of the cancer and may include surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of these.
