Pahlevan is a Persian term meaning hero or champion. In Iranian culture, it is used to describe skilled wrestlers as well as legendary figures who embody courage, generosity, and chivalry. The word is widely associated with the traditional martial and athletic ethos of Iran.

In the context of varzesh-e bastani, the traditional sport also known as pahlevani and zoorkhaneh, a Pahlevan is an athlete who trains to develop strength, endurance, flexibility, and martial technique while upholding a code of honor. Training takes place in a zoorkhaneh, or “house of strength,” where exercises combine wrestling, weapon training, and ritualized movements that emphasize discipline, humility, and communal virtue.

Historically, pahlevans were respected figures in Persian society, often connected to royal or noble patronage and public displays of prowess. In Persian epic literature, such as the Shahnameh, heroic characters are frequently described as pahlevans, personifying ideals of bravery and moral integrity. Rostam, one of the best-known heroes in Persian myth, is commonly regarded as a quintessential pahlevan.
