Pahlevani is a term deriving from the Persian word pahlevān, meaning hero or champion. In modern usage, it can refer to a master or practitioner within the traditional Iranian martial art and cultural practice known as varzesh-e bastani, sometimes called pahlevani and javanmardi. The adjective pahlevani is used to describe things related to this tradition, including the ethos and training of its athletes.

Varzesh-e bastani combines wrestling, calisthenics, strength training, and combat techniques with moral and spiritual dimensions. It is traditionally practiced in a zourkhaneh, or house of strength, where athletes perform a sequence of exercises to build endurance, flexibility, and grappling skill. Ceremonial movements, ritualized warmups, and the use of training implements accompany the routines. Central to the discipline are ideals such as courage, generosity, humility, and self-control, which are regarded as integral to athletic prowess.

History and heritage: The practice traces back to ancient Persia and is associated with legendary heroes in Persian literature, notably Rostam and other figures in the Shahnameh. In the modern era, it has persisted and adapted within Iranian society, contributing to national identity and cultural continuity. In 2010, UNESCO recognized Varzesh-e Bastani and the accompanying zourkhaneh rituals as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Modern status: Today, pahlevani traditions continue in Iran in dedicated zourkhaneh facilities in major cities and in diaspora communities. Practitioners are often called pahlevans; the title connotes a codified ideal of physical prowess combined with virtuous conduct and ethical behavior.
