Paberitüübid refers to the classification and categorization of paper based on its properties, manufacturing process, and intended use. Understanding different paper types is essential for selecting the appropriate material for various applications, from printing and writing to packaging and specialized industrial uses.

A common classification system distinguishes between woodfree and wood-containing papers. Woodfree papers, such as uncoated and coated printing and writing papers, are made from wood pulp that has undergone extensive chemical processing to remove lignin. This results in a brighter, more durable, and smoother paper. Coated papers have an additional layer of coating, typically clay or calcium carbonate, applied to the surface to improve printability, gloss, and ink holdout. Uncoated papers, on the other hand, have a more absorbent and matte surface.

Wood-containing papers, often called mechanical papers, retain a higher proportion of lignin, making them less expensive but also more prone to yellowing and degradation over time. Newsprint is a prime example, designed for short-term use. Other categories include specialty papers, which are engineered for specific functions. These can include tissue paper for hygiene products, cardstock for greeting cards and covers, absorbent paper for filters, and synthetic papers made from plastic materials for water-resistant applications. The grammage, or weight per square meter (gsm), is another key characteristic used to differentiate paper types, with higher gsm indicating a thicker and heavier paper. The choice of paper type significantly impacts the final product's appearance, feel, and performance.
