pHmonitoorimisel is the systematic measurement and recording of a solution’s pH over time to assess acidity or basicity, monitor process stability, and support quality control and environmental compliance. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 representing neutrality at standard conditions; values below 7 indicate acidity and above 7 basicity. pH is related to hydrogen ion activity and is commonly measured using a glass combination electrode connected to a pH meter. Temperature affects readings, so measurements are made with temperature compensation or reported at a reference temperature, often 25 °C.

Measurements can be made online in process streams with inline sensors, or intermittently in the laboratory using portable meters and calibrated buffer solutions. Calibration typically uses at least two standard buffers near the expected pH range (for example, pH 4, 7, and 10) to set the meter’s zero and slope. Regular maintenance—cleaning or replacing the electrode, proper storage, and correct electrode mounting—helps prevent drift and fouling. Advances include ISFET-based sensors that offer alternatives for harsh environments or miniaturized online monitoring.

Applications span water quality monitoring in municipal and industrial settings; agricultural irrigation and soil pH management; fermentation, bioprocessing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing; and food and beverage production. Data are often stored and analyzed for trends, with alarms or automatic control that adjust acid or base dosing to maintain a target pH.

Challenges include electrode aging, fouling, temperature and ionic strength effects, sample turbidity or coloration, and calibration drift. Following standardized procedures and proper maintenance improves reliability and comparability of pH measurements.
