pHbalansen refers to the regulation of hydrogen ion concentration in a biological system to keep the pH within a narrow, optimal range. The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, where 7 is neutral, values below are acidic and values above are basic. In humans, maintaining a stable systemic pH is essential because many enzymes and metabolic processes only function properly within a limited pH window.

The body uses several mechanisms to preserve pH balance. Buffers, such as the bicarbonate system (HCO3-/H2CO3), quickly dampen shifts in hydrogen ion concentration. The respiratory system modulates pH by changing the amount of carbon dioxide retained or expelled, since CO2 forms carbonic acid in solution. The kidneys contribute longer-term regulation by adjusting bicarbonate reabsorption and hydrogen ion excretion. These systems can compensate for disturbances, but the effectiveness and speed vary.

Normal arterial blood pH is typically about 7.35 to 7.45. Values outside the acceptable range indicate acidosis (low pH) or alkalosis (high pH) and can arise from metabolic or respiratory causes. Metabolic acidosis or alkalosis may result from kidney issues, diabetes, toxins, or loss of fluids; respiratory disturbances often stem from lung function or ventilation changes. Severe imbalances can impair organ function and require medical intervention, such as adjusting ventilation or administering buffers.

Measurement of pH balance commonly uses arterial blood gas analysis, which reports pH along with partial pressures of carbon dioxide, bicarbonate, and other parameters. In broader contexts, pH balance is also relevant to fields like agriculture (soil pH influencing nutrient availability) and skincare (skin surface pH affects barrier function), reflecting the concept’s multidisciplinary importance.
