Oxygendeprived describes a state in which oxygen delivery to tissues is reduced below what is required for normal cellular function. It is commonly used in medical contexts to refer to hypoxia or anoxia, conditions where tissue oxygen levels are inadequate or absent, respectively. Distinctions are made with hypoxemia, which is low oxygen in the blood, and with systemic or regional oxygen deprivation that can arise from respiratory or circulatory problems.

Causes of oxygendeprived states include impaired oxygen intake (airway obstruction, severe lung disease, high altitude), impaired gas exchange (pneumonia, pulmonary edema), reduced blood flow (shock, heart failure), and reduced oxygen-carrying capacity (severe anemia, carbon monoxide poisoning). Environments with low or absent oxygen, such as underwater, enclosed spaces, or certain industrial settings, can also create oxygendeprived conditions.

At the cellular level, insufficient oxygen forces cells to rely on anaerobic metabolism, leading to reduced energy production and lactic acidosis. Prolonged deprivation can cause cell injury and death, with the brain and heart being particularly vulnerable; irreversible damage can occur within minutes in severe cases.

Diagnosis relies on clinical assessment and measurements such as arterial blood gas and oxygen saturation (SpO2). Imaging and tests may identify the underlying cause. Treatment focuses on restoring oxygen delivery: removing the source of deprivation, providing supplemental oxygen, and supporting ventilation; treating respiratory or cardiovascular failure, anemia, or poisoning as appropriate. In certain settings, hyperbaric oxygen therapy or rapid evacuation may be indicated.
