Overstatement is a rhetorical device in which a speaker or writer presents something as more significant, important, or severe than it actually is. It often involves magnifying the magnitude or consequences of an event or attribute. When the exaggeration is obvious and intentional, it is commonly called hyperbole; when used more subtly, it remains an overstatement.

Overstatements can be intentional, as a stylistic choice to create emphasis, humor, or persuasion, or unintentional, arising from bias, stress, or misperception. They rely on context and audience to convey impression rather than precise fact.

Common contexts include literature, journalism, advertising, political discourse, and everyday conversation. In literature, overstatement can heighten drama or satire. In journalism and scientific communication, excessive overstatement risks misleading readers; in advertising, it can generate memorable claims but may erode credibility if claims are untenable.

Examples include "I've told you a million times," "This is the worst day ever," or "This chip is the best thing since sliced bread." Note that such statements are not intended to be taken literally and are typically used to convey emotion, intensity, or evaluation rather than exact fact.

Critical assessment of overstatement considers the speaker's intent, the audience, and the evidence presented. While overstatements can enhance rhetorical impact or humor, they can also undermine trust if perceived as deceptive or unsupported by facts. In rigorous discourse, they are often replaced or tempered with precise language.
