Overreaching is the act of extending beyond usual or legitimate limits in pursuit of a goal, whether in athletic training, organizational activities, or political power. In everyday usage it denotes any excess beyond capacity or authority, potentially intentional or due to misjudgment.

In sports science, overreaching refers to planned or unplanned increases in training load beyond current capacities. Functional overreaching involves a short-term performance drop followed by adaptation and improved performance after adequate recovery. Non-functional overreaching produces a more prolonged decline and fatigue, with mood disturbances and impaired recovery, increasing the risk of injury. If the excessive load persists, it may progress to overtraining syndrome, requiring extended rest and rehabilitation.

In governance and law, overreaching describes actions that exceed legal authority or infringe on rights, often via emergency powers, bureaucratic expansion, or coercive measures. It can provoke legal challenges, public opposition, or loss of legitimacy, and is typically addressed through checks and balances, accountability mechanisms, and reform.

Signs of overreaching include fatigue, reduced performance, sleep disruption, irritability, and decreased decision quality. Prevention emphasizes clear scope and limits, monitored workloads or mandates, rest periods, stakeholder feedback, and appropriate governance practices.
