Overinking refers to the act of applying excessive ink to a writing surface, often resulting in a blurred or smeared appearance. This can occur with various writing instruments, including fountain pens, felt-tip pens, and even traditional dip pens. The cause of overinking can be multifaceted, stemming from either the writing instrument itself or the technique employed by the writer.

With fountain pens, overinking may be a symptom of a nib that is too wet, meaning it delivers ink too freely. This can be due to improper nib alignment, a damaged nib, or a manufacturing defect. Alternatively, the ink itself might be too fluid, leading to excessive flow. In some cases, using highly saturated inks can also contribute to overinking, as these inks tend to be more prone to bleeding through paper.

When using felt-tip pens or markers, overinking can happen if too much pressure is applied, forcing an excessive amount of ink onto the paper. This is more common with softer tips that can absorb more ink and release it under pressure.
