Orkestern is a large instrumental ensemble central to Western classical music. It is typically organized into four families: strings (violins, violas, cellos, double basses); woodwinds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon); brass (horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba); and percussion (timpani and other drums, cymbals), with keyboards or other instruments sometimes added for specific works. A standard symphony orchestra comprises about 70 to 100 players and is led by a conductor who shapes interpretation and balance.

The modern orchestra arose in the 17th and 18th centuries, evolving from smaller ensembles as composers expanded the forces and color palette. The repertoire broadened accordingly, moving from early symphonies and concertos to include operas, ballets, and, in the 20th and 21st centuries, film music and contemporary works.

Musicians are organized into sections, with principal players guiding their groups. Auditions determine seating and roles. Rehearsals focus on intonation, rhythm, balance, and expressive articulation. Orchestras perform in concert halls, on tours, and in recording studios, often collaborating with conductors, soloists, and choirs across diverse genres.

Orchestras exist worldwide, from historic European centers to major venues in North America, Asia, and beyond. In common usage, the word orkestern can refer to a specific ensemble, but the general concept denotes a large, collaborative group dedicated to performing a broad range of instrumental music.
