Rehearsals

Rehearsal is a scheduled practice session in which performers and production staff work to prepare a performance for public presentation. The primary aim is to develop blocking, timing, interpretation, and coordination while integrating technical elements such as lighting, sound, costumes, and props. Rehearsals occur across disciplines including theatre, music, dance, film, and television, and the format adapts to the specific demands of each field.

In theatre, rehearsals typically begin with table reads or script analysis, followed by blocking rehearsals where movement and actor positions on stage are established. Subsequent sessions focus on line readings, run-throughs without full technical elements, and then technical or dress rehearsals that test cues, lighting, sound, props, and costumes. A final dress rehearsal simulates a real performance before audiences.

Musical rehearsals emphasize ensemble cohesion and musical accuracy. Sectional rehearsals may focus on a single instrument or voice part, while full ensemble rehearsals refine balance, tempo, and phrasing. Dance productions rehearse choreography and timing with music, often integrating costumes and lighting gradually.

In film and television, rehearsals may include table reads, blocking with camera positions, and rehearsals without or with limited camera work. Directors, conductors, choreographers, stage managers, and actors collaborate to implement notes and revise performance elements. The rehearsals culminate in a performance that is consistent, polished, and ready for public presentation.
