In everyday language, orderless is often used poetically or descriptively to convey chaos or disorganization, though in more technical contexts it is typically replaced with more precise terms.

In mathematics and computer science, orderless describes properties or objects that are invariant under the permutation of their components. A common example is a commutative operation, where shifting the order of operands does not change the result (for instance, a + b = b + a). Sets and multisets are inherently orderless collections because their identity is determined by membership or multiplicity rather than arrangement. Unordered containers in programming languages provide similar semantics, offering access to elements without relying on a specific order.

The term is derived from the word order plus the suffix -less, meaning lacking.
