An orangerie is a building or room originally designed to protect orange trees and other delicate plants from cold weather in European estates. It emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries as part of royal and aristocratic gardens, combining horticultural purpose with a display or leisure function.

Design and features: Typical orangeries are long, low pavilions with extensive glazing—glass walls or large windows and a glass roof—set near a residence or garden. They were often built with iron or timber frames and classical ornamentation, balancing the needs of wintering citrus with architectural grandeur. The climate inside could be tempered by sun, allowing citrus trees, myrtle, and other exotics to survive winter.

Historical role and evolution: In the late 18th and 19th centuries, orangeries also served as elegant winter gardens and reception spaces for the aristocracy. Some were later repurposed as museums, galleries, or social venues as tastes shifted toward conservatories or as the cost of wintering citrus rose.

Notable examples: The Orangerie de Versailles is among the largest in Europe and was conceived to house orange trees during the winter. In Paris, the Musé de l’Orangerie occupies the former orangery of the Tuileries Garden and houses major works of Impressionism, including Monet’s Water Lilies.

Etymology and usage: The term is French for a place to grow oranges, and in English usage it can refer broadly to any orangery or conservatory on a historic estate.
