It is a way to measure the workload of a student and the learning outcomes associated with a particular course or study module. One opintopiste, or ECTS credit in the European context, typically corresponds to approximately 25-30 hours of student work, including lectures, independent study, assignments, and examinations. This credit system facilitates the comparability of studies both within Finland and internationally, as it aligns with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).

The opintopistemäärillä system allows for a standardized assessment of academic progress. Students accumulate opintopisteitä as they successfully complete courses and other learning activities. A full academic year of study is generally equivalent to 60 opintopisteitä.
